Excellent process. Delegation is one area in management where managers usually fall short.
This process works. Do it.

This is an excellent overview of delegating tasks.

I would add another question to the first set of questions:
5) Is it a task that you dislike, or drains your energy, even if you are good at it?

Regarding the second set of questions:
These are excellent criteria to use, before you've built an organization with people that you trust.

At the start of your business, sure.
But if you continue to operate like this, where only you can do the sensitive, risky, strategic tasks, you're running the business by yourself, however large your staff.

As Michael Gerber (E-Myth) discusses, you put limits on your growth and your happiness when you are the business. It can be the worst slavery of all.

There are products available such as Freedom Business System which show a businessperson how to systematize their business, so it can grow, and they can be free. Just as a business leverages its power by using the right software, so a business leverages its power by establishing the right processes and systems.

Hi Megan

Thanks for sharing. Delegating is definitely the key to being able to focus on the things we want to focus on. I don't know that I would go to the extent of delegating everything in my business - (else why be in business?) but it does serve as an image to strive toward.

I'll be talking more about this on Monday.

Liz,

This was an excellent post. I struggle with delegating, even in my own household, so this was great for me to read. Particularly with #1, I want to learn new things, even if it takes me substantially longer to get the job done. (Sigh)

I also read James Brausch's blog, and am amazed by the fact that he seems to have almost completely delegated the tasks in his business. I guess that is how you attain true freedom!

Thanks for making me think, Liz, and reevalate how much I really need to be doing, at home and in business.

Hi Janet

Great comment - and obviously one that James employs. I hear those types of opinions a lot lately - especially since the publication of the Four Hour Work-Week by Tim Ferris. I have some definite opinions about that topic - so I'll be sure to address in an upcoming post.

Thanks for sparking the idea.

I think it's possible to delegate even more. According to James Brausch's Freedom Business System, you should be able to outsource everything. That way, you can sell your business or be away from it with no problem.
